Hellvik is the westernmost area in the municipality of Eigersund, on
national road 44 where the region of Dalane ends and Jæren
begins. The landscape is rocky and quite barren.
Traditionally the local population have been farmers and
fishermen, as are quite a few of them even today. The ground where the
quarries are situated is owned partly by some of the local farmers who
get paid by the ton.
Whenever a part of one of the quarries is exhausted,
that area is revegetated by adding an 80cm layer of earth and seeding
it. This complies with the regulations regarding the depth of the layer
of earth on agriculturally productive land. This procedure is closely
monitored by landscape architects in order to prevent erosion. Thus
barren hills are being replaced by fertile fields.
Local truck drivers are involved in the transport of the
finished product from the quarries to the harbours, which are also a
source of income for the local community. The quarries at present
employ 12 persons.
Not far away from the quarries at Hellvik you find Hellvik Hus, a major supplier of
predesigned houses. Some artists have settled in the area, and tourism
is also of some importance, especially during the summer. Hellvik is
well placed, between Egersund
and Stavanger, and has its own railway station.
