History

History / prospects : Both quarries were opened early in the 1960ties. For the first decade there was a constant demand for labradorite for example as an additive in washing powder and as a grinding agent in toothpaste. The white colour and the good grinding capacity made the product eminently suitable for such purposes.

After 1980, however, an Italian marble proved to be even better, and Edelsplitt had to be put to new uses. The solution that emerged was the asphalt and ceramic market which has been steadily growing since 1980. This again has led to a gradual increase in the yearly output from the quarries to the present level of 300 000 ton per. annum. 10 000 as additive for concrete the remainder for asphalt and ceramics.

Like all mines, however, these quarries have a limited life span. At the present rate of production they may last for another 10 - 15 years. It is already apparent that they are shrinking while the adjacent fields keep growing. While this is going on new ideas are in demand; for the use of the stone as well as for the further development of the area.
